Hanging Around

This Pileated Woodpecker wasted half an hour hammering on all sides of the (never-used) nesting box, trying to find insects. The box makes a great drum -- I'm sure the neighbors could hear it several houses away.

He took a quick look in the entry hole and pulled out a couple of wood shavings, but it didn't seem to appeal to him as a residence.
