Govett and his horse - BBC 18

Trisharooni has given a very good history of the statue, so I won't bother you with this.

I would add though that, to boost tourism, some clever 'heathens came up with the story of Govett that this statue portrays (as opposed to the surveyor). The story involves a supposed Bushranger "Govett" who robbed a bank in Blackheath, was chased to the end of the ridge and then rode over, the gold apparently never being found.

I understand that the talking box did work and gave the story of Govett the bushranger - and maybe even the real version - but has not worked for a very long time. The statue was also lit up at night, but this hasn't worked for quite a while either. Perhaps it's time to get the lights and the story going again.

A challenging blip as, with the rain coming down as it was, it was akin to standing under Govetts Leap - our most visited local waterfall, named after the surveyor, not the bushranger.

For those that are interested, here is Govetts Leap, the falls at the end of Govetts Leap Road, our main shopping street.
