On Top of the World!

Had a bit of a late start today as some members of the family had to be coaxed out of bed. There were shudders at the suggestion of a walk but I used a carrot in the form of a swim in the river afterwards. Here are the team at the Rimutaka Trig, a short sharp walk up from a carpark on the Rimutaka Hill Road. The expression on daughter no.2's face shows how thrilled she was with the trek up...

I've never been up here before and understand it can be very windy, with signs at the bottom warning not to attempt the trip up in bad weather. Today there was barely a breeze and the clear skies meant we had fantastic 360 degree views over the Rimutakas, the Wairarapa, and the South Island in the distance.

Back to the car and a short drive to Kaitoke where we swam in the river and cooked sausages for tea over the camping stove in the area where they filmed Rivendell from Lord of the Rings.
