Toothwort

We went for a walk this afternoon and went to where there have always been toothwort. Years ago there was a large patch of it but less and less as time has gone on with only three spikes there this year. Weather conditions perhaps?

They are a parasite that lives on the roots of hazel or elm and have no chlorophyll. They live underground all year just appearing above ground in spring.  A very interesting plant.

I'm sorry about the annoying piece of grass in front but I was balancing on an awkward bank so couldn't do anything about it!
