Guernsey Water Tower

This tower belongs to Guernsey water who provide for all Guernsey's fresh water needs. It is interesting how Guernsey manages to provide both the population and visitors with fresh water and a quick look at this LINK will give you a tiny bit of the history, which is not too boring, I promise!!
I pass this tower quite often and it forms the highest point in the island at about 300 ft above sea level..you can't miss it, it is directly on the flightpath to the airport !!!
Lots of flashing red lights and aerials adorn it of course.
I believe the purpose of the tower is to maintain water pressure to the whole island and, I suppose to prevent all the pumps from working continuously...but I am no water expert!
It always reminds me of a tale told by an old male friend, deceased some years ago, who worked for the Waterboard during the war when he was a teenager.
The tale he recounted was that, during the German occupation, all civilians were prohibited from the beaches which were heavily mined. It was a hot August day and he was sent up to service something on top of the tank. It looked very inviting so, it was down to the underwear (I assume!) and several circuits of the lovely cool water.
As far as he was aware, he was the only person to ever swim across the Guernsey Water Tower..how is that for a claim to fame!
8-)
