Over the years at the allotment I have had great success with bird boxes, but absolutely none with bug hotels and the like.  The plot next to me has solitary bees coming and going all day long from a similar bughouse, but I have yet to see as much as a spider take up residence.  It's not as if I am charging an exorbitant rent.  :-)
