The Alderman

Another breezy day but still had seven species of butterfly garden, in order of appearance: Peacock, Large White, Holly Blue, Speckled Wood, Brimstone, Orange Tip and Red Admiral. According to my copy of the Rev. F. O. Morris's 'History of British Butterflies' (8th edition, 1895), the Red Admiral appears in June. Morris also provides its alternative name: the Alderman Butterfly. Although he doesn't provide an explanation I remember reading somewhere that it was said that the Red Admiral 'quaffed like an Alderman'.
