No ordinary Anzac Day

25 April, Anzac Day, the day when Australia and New Zealand remember those who have served and died in armed conflicts.

This one is no ordinary Anzac Day. No crowds at dawn services in Australia and on Gallipoli, no marches with the younger generations proudly wearing the medals of their grandparents and great-grandparents, no two-up games in the pubs.

Some people stood at their doors before dawn with candles, some strung up flags. We watched the dawn service from the Australian War Memorial on television, and it was very moving even though, or perhaps because, there were so few people there.

Lest we forget.
