Doubtful Sound and a thousand waterfalls

Should you travel to Doubtful Sound you need to wish for rain. The steep sided mountains have little or no top soil and all the lush greenery clings to the land via crevices, nooks and crannies; the rain pours down the granite producing fantastic waterfalls which do not last much longer than the last downpour. The air is filled with mist and dampness and a very special atmosphere is created. The water crashes down into the black depths of this fiord which stretches 40 miles out to the Southern seas, the blackness of the water being caused by salt water with a layer of tannin laden fresh water atop it.
It does rain a lot in Doubtful Sound for this is New Zealand's rain forest (3,000 - 6,000 min annually)
