Day 38 - Frank Matcham

Day 38 - Frank Matcham (1854-1920) was a prolific theatre architect and designer. The plaque on Richmond Theatre is not blue as it was put there by the Frank Matcham Society . He designed and oversaw construction of over 90 theatres and was responsible for the refurbishment of many more. These included the London Coliseum, the London Palladium, the Victoria Palace , the Hackney Empire as well as theatres in major cities throughout the UK including the Tower ballroom in Blackpool Tower. Sadly many no longer exist but Richmond Theatre does(see extra photo). It was constructed in 1900 so this year is its 120th anniversary. I went to a talk about the theatre and was amazed to find out about Matcham and his work.
