Comet man

Striking monument erected in 1872 to the memory of Henry Bell born in Linlithgow in 1766 and died Helensburgh in 1830.
He was the first to successfully apply steam power for navigation and the Comet was the first steam driven passenger ship introduced into service in 1812. He  named the ship after a spectacular comet which had appeared a year earlier.
