Unfurling

I heard the piano player again this afternoon—it isn’t my older neighbor at all, but her granddaughter! And the music, around which I spun such stories, is not at all from the nineteenth century, but very contemporary. They are themes from movies. I may have to rent Howl’s Moving Castle just to see where it came from. And Amélie. Both of these themes are so lush and soaring, perfect transport from our so-called reality.

This morning a friend dropped off a beautiful lap quilt that she had made for me—what a fabulous surprise. Of course, I burst into tears. That seems to be my reaction to everything these days. I couldn’t believe someone had done that for me. “Everyone needs a blankie when they’re not feeling good,” she texted. I definitely perked up.
