Fountain in the Desert

One of the many fountains in Dubai. This one is located in Dubai Marina and little kids love to play in it, plus it looks stunning on an evening. Youtube have some fantastic videos - see Emaar Marina Walk Fountain!

Anyway this got me thinking - why are there so many fountains here, good old Google came up with many facts, these are just two I found interesting:

1. There is no hiding the fact that Dubai is built in the desert, and deserts are water-scarce and, well, hot for most of the time. It seems almost right just to say that. In the battle between humans and their natural environment, between Dubai and the water-scarce desert, humans appear to have won. As a show of force, of accomplishment, of humans over nature, there are elaborate fountains and so-called water features almost everywhere one goes in Dubai - especially in the glistening-gleaming part of the city.

2. Muslim garden designers used fountains to create miniature versions of the gardens of paradise.

My opinion is they are just nice to look at and draw people to them!
