Grafting Mangoes

Mango grows everywhere in Malawi in November/December each year. The problem is that they all ripen together and regularly rot before they are eaten.
We are tackling this in two ways. Firstly we are grafting nine new varieties to extend the season and we are just about to begin drying and storing the mature fruit.
Here, one of our NRC (Natural Resources College) students is learning the practicalities of the grafting process from Benidicto as they start on this year's crop. We are converting academic farmers into REAL ones!!
Of course, as with all of life, it's a two way road and our guys are learning as well.
