Among the numerous dandelions beside a field there were still some late flowering coltsfoot.   Some mistakenly think coltsfoot flowers are dandelions but although the colours and seed heads are fairly similar their leaves and stems are very different.  The coltsfoot smaller composite flower has thinner petal rays, a scaly stem and the leaves supposedly resemble the feet of a colt or young horse.  Leaves appear after the flowers which are among the earliest in the year whereas the peak flowering of dandelions is in late spring after their leaves have appeared.
