Life in a Northern Town

Day 45 - Goodbye Grandpa

Today was Derek's funeral - it was a burial so we were able to have a short service outside with the family there as long as we were socially distanced by household.

It was a gloriously sunny day, the birds were singing, and very fittingly a train sped past just as we arrived at the graveside. It was a lovely send off, maybe not what we had imagined - I think in normal times there would have been a lot of people there - but it was full of love and happy memories. He's now with Shirley and at peace.

Although the four of us are all one household, my brother in law's family had to stay apart - my nephew lives alone, and my niece is a doctor so she has been isolated from her parents for 2 months now - it was hard not to just all head back to the house and sit together to share our sadness. Still, we are very lucky that we could at least all be there, some families have not been so lucky.

Back home now - no idea what day it is, and a Friday Bank Holiday will add to the confusion.

In extras is some of the lovely light in the old part of the graveyard before our service.
