I was digging around in my garden box and kept finding these little pieces of paper that resembled ancient scrolls. Had I stumbled upon pieces of a treasure map? Then I realized they were pieces of birch bark from the tree just behind the neighbor’s fence. Much less exciting - but also gave me an inkling of how, in centuries past, the bark might have had many uses: paper, splints, medicine.
