Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The 75th VE Day

It being the 75th Victory in Europe day I decided to bake a cake. What could be more appropriate than Winston Churchill's favourite fruit cake.? It originates from Churchill’s long-standing cook, Georgina Landemare who catered for Winston during the war at Downing Street and then at his family home, Chartwell in Kent.

Were we to be  still enduring WW2 rationing this little cake would have required a month's worth of my butter allowance, a week's worth of sugar and 5 week's worth of eggs. I doubt that I would have had any access to the required dried fruit, spices and self raising flour.

Extra. Meanwhile in remembrance of the 70–85 million million killed in the war the village poppies again are adorning the church hall railings.
