St Clement's Church, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex

Not an organised tribute, but one serviceman's moment of remembrance on the 75th anniversary of VE Day, at the memorial to the Leigh fishermen killed returning from Dunkirk.

Around 15 people using the path through the graveyard were stopped in their tracks as the church clock struck 11 and he stood to attention.

Two minutes later, the man turned to discover the small crowd that had gathered behind him. He gave a sheepish smile, fumbled for a cigarette and shuffled away without a word.
