Day 46 – Juvenile Coot

There doesn’t seem to be a consensus over a name for young Coots so today here is a blip of a not tiny, but also not teenage Coot. It is at Craiglockhart Pond, where we had gone to try and see the new Cygnets. The female, who is called Brighid, sat steadfastly on a mix of eggs and young so we only got a brief view of a fluffy Cygnet; her mate is Siegfried. All very Wagnerian.

It is also the day we commemorated the end of hostilities in Europe at the end of WW2. Thank goodness for Covid-19 putting a dampener on a triumphalist day; we should not be celebrating as it’s far too jingoistic.

Best large.
