One Or Two

When you’re part
of a pair
you might not suppose
 
that those
who stand alone
do so out of choice.

But there’s a sharp pleasure
to be had
in being a lone voice.

You answer to yourself.
Any disturbance
is your own noise.

And if someone truly enjoys
their own company
that’s a reason to rejoice.

For some like nothing better
than being free of ties
and too much chatter.

Though when loneliness
is thrust upon you
that is a different matter.
