Yellow boxes

Every time (well. maybe not every time exactly) I see a yellow box on the road, I think of the slogan from one of the Public Information Films of the early 1970s. Not only were these government commissioned films content to tell us how to survive a nuclear attack (how to choose a fall-out room, what to do when the warnings sound etc), they also taught us:

'Do not drive onto box until your exit road is clear. It's what the good drivers have been doing for years'.

Similarly, when I see a driver sneaking through traffic lights just before they turn red, I find myself muttering 'Don't be an amber gambler'

Ah..the lasting power of advertising.
