Before Starbucks

Coffeeshops like these use to dot Malaysian landscape - a concept brought in by migrant Chinese in the late 1800's. Affectionately called 'Kopitiam', it experienced a resurgence with modern more hip franchised Kopitiams selling more or less the same stuff at much inflated prices.

The location of this coffeeshop makes it doubly unique. It is located in Crab Island or Pulau Ketam which is reachable only by boat located on mangrove swamp where its 5,000 inhabitants live in houses, go to school or shop where the buildings and walkways are on stilts.
