Wrens's London: St Michael Cornhill....

....Known to be in existence before the Norman Conquest, the Parish Church of St Michael's Cornhill was recorded in 1055, and the church stands on the former site of a Roman Basilica built in the first century AD.

The area of Cornhill is so named as it is the highest point in London and was the site of a medieval corn market.

In the late 1850s, the Drapers Company, motivated by legislation that would have forced them to hand funds over to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners if not spent on St Michael's, decided to fund work on the church and asked George Gilbert Scott to carry out the work. Scott designed the Gothic porch you see pictured, decorated with carving showing "St Michael disputing with Satan". (I just thought that it was an impressive looking front door)

Another lesser known fact, although I have done a bit of research, that if you hang around this church for long enough you will probably find blipper Caroline Beveridge hanging around outside a bar local to this church (I can show photographic evidence)

Thanks for all the lovely comments on St Clements Danes on yesterdays blip. Thanks to RichieBoo for pointing out that it would look better in black & white and he wasn't far wrong.

Last but not least, Happy Birthday Jayne x hope you liked your present.

Even better in LARGE , no not Jayne
