Shipping containers as rock protection at Sumner

We biked along the Summit Road to Godley Head this morning, and stopped along the way for this shot of Sumner. The seaside suburb was badly hit by the June 2012 aftershock, and now a wall of shipping containers, stacked two high, lines the road below the shattered cliffs.

Many of the houses on the estuary side of the Brighton Spit are now red-zoned and will have to be abandoned as the land has sunk relative to sea level, and is now considered too unstable for repair or re-building.

Two Abseil Access vehicles passed us, and parked by the side of the road. Presumably they are still at work stabilising loose rock around the hills.

It was already getting very warm when we arrived home for a late breakfast, so not sure what the thermometer will climb too today. There was a suggestion that some places might hit 40 degrees this week, but let's hope it doesn't go that high.
