Inversion Layer

Something Wanaka is infamous for is the inversion layer that occurs when cold air that is close to the ground gets trapped by a layer of warmer air.
In my photo taken from our bedroom you can see the line of fog blocking out all the mountains we would normally see. Frequently the sun burns through it, but sometimes it can hang around for days! It is often much lower than this.  It is most unpopular and many people , who can afford it, escape Wanaka at this time of year for warmer climates. They will have to stay within NZ this year!
Often we can drive a few kilometres down the road and get out if it for a while.  It’s now mid afternoon, and the sun is peaking through -however we have had a fire on to keep us cosy.
