Throwing out the bathwater

I sat in the sun yesterday after watering the plants in pots and filling up the bird bath. 
A pigeon alighted and ,totally ignoring the dogs and me, proceeded to take a bath. It spent some time flicking the water out with its beak. I guess it didn't like it being so deep
