I JUST SOUND CRAZY....REALLY, I'M NOT!

COMMON LOON (Gavia immer) I made this shot in April 2017 as the birds were flying through our area on the way north to breed. Although called common, they are not so common around here. We see them only twice a year as they migrate through the area either heading north to their breeding grounds or heading south to find open water. They are fish eaters and open water is a necessity.

BEAUTIFUL bird.....sexual dichromatism (different coloration for males and females) does not exist among loons. Not possible to identify sex of bird by color or any other marker. Males are typically larger than females but that is not always so. They seem to know which sex is which and I guess that's all you really need. They do breed in northern Wisconsin and their call in unmistakable. If you're from the big city and are canoeing around near dark...if one of these calls out it will shake you to your core. Until you find out what it is, of course. It's positively unearthly.
