Scary...?

Yes, today it was a little bit scary to listen the ice cracking under the feet when skating.

Dangerous? Not at all! The ice was actually very thick but there have been a couple of days of raining, then a day and a night with minus Celsius degrees again. The ice upon the old ice and water is thin but the cracking sounds are nothing to fear. Of course, you have to be careful because it's easy to go through the thin ice and tumble on the ice; this is dangerous!

When skating on a lake you can hear a lot of different sounds created by tensions in the ice. When you move over the ice, your movements contribute to create new sounds. There are rumbling sounds (like a thunderstorm). Shooting sounds. Lot of low och high crisping sounds maybe. Singing sounds. Yes, really - the singing ice! All these sounds can be experienced as terrifying but if you know what all the sounds are about, you can learn a lot about the ice quality and the ice thickness as well.

Listen to this ice concert, the lake scenery is very beautiful too.
