Remarkable

I had a morning walk through the grasslands at Thorpe Hall, which are looking good at the moment with sheets of Meadow Buttercup and Ox-eye Daisy in some areas. There's also a large population of Goat's-beard and it's more magnificent relative, Salsify, which has large purple flowers. Occasionally these two species hybridise and then back-cross to provide a dazzling array of colour forms - the F1 hybrid is shown in the image and typically has a yellow centre and burgundy-coloured outer ligules. The species and hybrid even have an associated own gall-fly, Orellia falcata,  which is Nationally Scarce but seems to be doing OK at this site.
