Three stooges

We all went for a spin in the new car.
I thought it would mean the end of arguments over who sits in the front. I was partially right - future arguments will be over who sits in the middle.
Just what is a spin?
Thinking about it, my guess is that you take the car for a spin - or rather the engine.
