Beach Life

I thought I'd do a postcard from the beach at West Runton today. A beautiful day for a walk, not too busy, not too warm, high cloud but sun - just perfect. The people there were social distancing, but it still bemuses me that they all pitch their spot within 50m of the beach entrance! I had a lovely chat with my friend L today too.

The US is still in crisis in the aftermath of the homicide of George Floyd whilst being restrained by Police by kneeling on his neck. There have been 6 days of peaceful protests and also rioting which have been met by shows of force by Trump which have added fuel to the fire. Black lives matter!

Day 79 / Day 71 of Lockdown / Day 2 of Step 2 (for my record only)
UK deaths up 324 to 39,369 with new hospital admissions of 436 being the lowest since 20th Mar (day 5 of restrictions). ONS weekly report up to 22/5 recorded 48,106 deaths with Covid on the death certificate with 32.5% overall being in care homes (I don't thing this includes care home residents who died in hospital). Excess mortality is 61,895. PHE report issued on Covid risks largely stated what was already known, you are at higher risk if you're over 65, male, are from a BAME group, live in a city / deprived area. More work is to be done to understand the BAME risk in particular.  Deaths in Brazil pass 30,000.

Reporting on Covid testing has been criticised by the UK Statistics Authority, which is good as it has been obvious for a while that they are focusing on confirming testing targets have been met. I find it annoying that we don't know how many people have been tested and in what context (i.e. as they have symptoms, routine testing of care workers etc to confirm they don't have the virus, population sampling to see how much virus is around, antibody testing to see who's had the virus etc).
