Hells Gate

Hells Gate is the name given by convicts in the 1800's that were sent from England to Sarah Island convict settlement on the west coast of Tasmania.

The Gate refers to a 60 meter opening in the coastal reef system that allows passage into the huge McQuarie harbour.

Hells Gate named so,as they saw the settlement as close to "hell" and this passage was the entry point to their interment, some "For the term of their natural life"
