Mixed and Massive Piles ...

Backblips continued ...

Grey towers on a grey autumn day. Durham Cathedral taken from Prebends Bridge. This is one of the more popular postcard views of Durham. The Castle is just out of shot to the left of the Cathedral. I love that the Walter Scott poem is inscribed here, but the 'mixed and massive piles' cause more than a little amusement. In fact I edited out some related graffiti - thank goodness for cloning!

I think that the words are legible enough, but just in case ...

Grey towers of Durham
Yet well I love thy mixed and massive piles
Half church of God, half castle 'gainst the Scot
And long to roam these venerable aisles
With records stored of deeds long since forgot

(Sir Walter Scott)
