No Entry

I was walking along a disused railway line a few days ago and came across this tunnel entrance, now blocked.  This is the Burdale tunnel for the defunct Malton to Driffield rail line and is 1.5km long.  Construction started in 1847, but it was not completed until 1853. I wonder how much sweat and toil (and how many lives?) were used up in digging it.  The tunnel was closed in 1958 and so was not a victim of the Beecham report that saw the closure of so many railway lines in the UK.  It seems such a waste to just brick it up, but.....
