Making a snow cave

I made a snow cave today for fun and exercise for emergency situations. It is not a game for children to make such a cave. In Finland a 10 years old boy died to a snow cave a month ago. There are some safety things you must know. You must put 40 cm long sticks from outside the cave and when you carve the snow from inside, you know when to stop. Then you must make a hole from above through snow inside to the cave. And you had best to have a spade always with you when you are inside. And also a long stick by which you can make the hole through the roof if it snows. And when you sleep there, you had to have a candle near the hole, so you can see if there is lack of oxygen. And best that there were two people there.
The floor of the cave much be on higher level than the top of the outer hole from where you go in to the cave. That way the temperature stays around zero although it were -20 outside.
And don't think that all Finns do snow caves, it is only a hobby for special people. Although in some cases it can save your life in wilderness, it is much easier to put a tent if the weather is not extreme. You must have at least 2.5 meters high heap of snow. I have started to make the heap of snow already a month ago.
Your clothes will be very wet after carving the cave. Two years ago I did also a snow cave and you see how it looks from outside, see here.
