Day 84 - Blue plaque from a few days ago in Putney. Lawrence Oates(1880-1912) was a British army officer and later joined Scott on The Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. A five man party set out to march the last 167 miles to the pole on 4th January 1912. They reached the pole on January 18th to find that Ronald Amundsen had beat them by reaching the Pole on 14th December 1911. On the return journey they had difficult conditions and Oates feet became frostbitten causing him to slow the party down. According to Scott’s diary he walked out of their tent into a blizzard saying”I am just going outside and may be some time” . The other members of the party also perished.
