Earthship

These are fascinating, off the grid, homes. Rammed earth construction using old tires, (so the walls are 3-4 feet wide.  The back of the house is built into the earth.  The front of the house is all glass = passive solar plus they use tiny wind mills for power.  500 gallon cisterns collect the rainwater.  Recycled colored bottles (beer, soda, etc) serve as ornamentation You can see them as circles all around the turret and door.

Glen and I once stayed in one for a week in the winter (long before we moved to NM).  The nights were in the low 40s F,  the days in the low 60s.  We never felt too cold, nor too hot and didn't even need to use the wood stove.

We liked them so much we considered building one, so I took a 3-day workshop at the Greater Earth Community.  Helped build a lesser wall where re-used aluminum cans (beer and soda) serve as the bricks around which adobe is used like cement.  These homes are very work intensive to build, but once built very self-sufficient.
