What Happened

We'd been on the motorway
for hours.

I caught the briefest glimpse
of a pissed off driver stuck behind a lorry
as we exited onto the slip road.

Progress at last!

But Katia was going too fast.
When we reached the roundabout
she lost control.

We crashed through barriers.
Flew off the road.

I could see trees below us
so we must have been very high up.

I knew this was probably it for us.

I took her hand as our car descended,
perhaps I should say ‘plummeted’
but we’d gone into a slo-mo moment
which gave me the opportunity to take her hand.

Looking back,
I’m so grateful to have had that moment

and I’ve worked hard at convincing myself
she heard me say

‘I love you’

and

‘We’ll be OK’
