Long distance whales

Heard an interview on breakfast radio this morning with the manager of a caravan park somewhere on the Eyre Highway. The Eyre Highway links South Australia with West Australia via the Nullarbor plain. Business owners on the highway have been doing it tough since the state borders closed.

The manager was urging visitors to return when the borders open, listing the attractions you can see near their caravan park, including whales. 'Really, whales?' queried the radio host.

'Oh yes, you just drive a couple of hundred kms up the highway.' Maybe we have a different sense of distance in Australia.

It reminded me though of seeing whales on a trip across the  Nullarbor in 2009. We didn't have the equipment for closeup photos, but that hardly mattered. Just watching these magnificent creatures was extraordinary.
