IIS Cesaris - My high school

Yesterday, in all Italy, all students of the last year of high school have started Maturità, the final exam of their career.
Since the online lessons have been a mess, and their physical presence in school haven't been accepted if not two weeks ago, this year the exam will be 'light': one hour of oral exam about their courses and a thesis they prepared (I read 50% of the students want to talk about the lock down), and the commission is made up of only their professors (exept for the president, who is an extern).

What I did my last year of high school (and what it's normally done) was a written essay starting from a list of title from which you can choose (about history, or italian literature, or an argumentation starting from newspapers' articles) and that are decided by the Minister of Instuction. The next day is made up of multiple essay about one of the most important course of your type of school (mine was biochemistry). After that, for my year, the Minister decided for a Quizzone (multiple questions on multiple courses: mine were chemistry, philosophy, math and english).
And then the oral exams, starting from the written exams and my thesis (about myasthenia gravis). Everything with a mixed commision.

It's very, very difficult, especially for the pressure put on the student: they say it's not the most important exam of your life, but it's the first one and you need to learn from it. And the mark they give you (min 60 - max 100 with honors) is public and it's written on the local newspaper. It can be important for your curriculum, and raise the probability to enter a specific faculty (es. psychology).

It's part of our scolastic culture, but it's still a nightmare, literaly. Many have their scaramantic rituals and I still occasionally dream of it. Never slept so little. Even slept on the sofa so that I could wake up every two hours and read something. A nightmare.

Ieri, in tutta Italia, tutti gli studenti dell'ultimo anno delle superiori hanno iniziato la Maturità, l'esame finale della loro carriera.
Poiché le lezioni online sono state un disastro e la loro presenza fisica a scuola non è stata accettata se non due settimane fa, quest'anno l'esame sarà "leggero": un'ora di prova orale sui loro corsi e una tesi che hanno preparato ( Ho letto il 50% degli studenti che vogliono parlare della chiusura) e la commissione è composta solo dai loro professori (eccetto per il presidente, che è un esterno).

Quello che ho fatto durante il mio ultimo anno di liceo (e cosa è stato fatto normalmente) è stato un saggio scritto che parte da un elenco di titoli da cui è possibile scegliere (sulla storia o sulla letteratura italiana o una discussione a partire dagli articoli dei giornali) e che sono decisi dal Ministro d'Istuzione. Il giorno successivo è composto da numerosi saggi su uno dei corsi più importanti della tua tipologia di scuola (il mio era biochimica). Dopodiché, per il mio anno, il Ministro decise per un Quizzone (domande multiple su più corsi: la mia era chimica, filosofia, matematica e inglese).
E poi gli esami orali, a partire dagli esami scritti e dalla mia tesi (sulla miastenia grave). Tutto con una commissione mista.

È molto, molto difficile, soprattutto per la pressione esercitata sullo studente: dicono che non è l'esame più importante della tua vita, ma è il primo e devi imparare da esso. E il voto che ti danno (minimo 60 - massimo 100 con lode) è pubblico ed è scritto sul giornale locale. Può essere importante per il tuo curriculum e aumentare la probabilità di entrare in una facoltà specifica (es. Psicologia).

Fa parte della nostra cultura scolastica, ma è ancora un incubo, letterale. Molti hanno i loro rituali scaramantici e ancora occasionalmente lo sogno. Non ho mai dormito così poco. Dormivo persino sul divano in modo che potessi svegliarmi ogni due ore e leggere qualcosa. Un incubo.

Buona fortuna a tutti gli studenti. È sicuramente un ricordo importante.
