Crazy About Birds

Pay Attention!

I notice fledgling birds more these days - because I'm paying more attention, I guess. Today I noticed two tufted titmice come in for seeds and one of them looked paler overall than the other. Once I had looked at the photos I took I could see that one was clearly a fledgling. You can see the yellow in the corners of its mouth in this picture. That's the remnant of its "gape" which will soon entirely disappear. It also doesn't have the distinctly dark circle of feathers around its eye, or the black bit above its beak. See the extras for the adult and another of the fledgling with (behind) the adult. I guess Mom (or maybe Dad) was showing junior where there were seeds to be had!
