That's a big 'un!

While in the greenhouse this morning I heard a low-pitched buzz from some flying insect, as it went past the open door.
This is what I managed to steer the cat away from: a female giant wood wasp. Also known as a horntail, because of the upturned point on the abdomen.
Absolutely harmless, although a bit scary looking: that pointy bit is her egg laying duct.
They're more common among pine trees, apparently, so I was surprised she was sniffing around the treated wood of my raised beds.

I also am hoping I may have a bumblebees' nest in an old rat hole, in a bed near the outbuilding. I saw one fly out.
