If you can't beat them...

Yellow Iris (Iris pseudacorus)

Another of those plants I have grown up using a different name.  I have always known them as Yellow Flag Iris or even simply "Flags".  My books tell me this is Yellow Iris and the only Iris with the word Flag in its name is Purple flag Iris (Iris versicolor).

Just outside the north window is and area we had difficulty growing anything in when we moved in.  So it became a bog garden.  A hole was dug and lined with an old car cover pierced here and there by a garden fork.  The soil was then returned.  Well it's not exactly boggy but retains moisture well enough for these wild iris to thrive.

Before somebody pops up and says you aren't allowed to dig up wild plants, we didn't.  When friends moved (years ago) to another house they found in the garden a clump of "Flags" which had spread in from outside the fence.  They didn't want them all so we relieved them of some.
