Rifle

Most Scottish inland lochs were served by steamers from the early 19thC until the modern era when cars and buses mostly spelled the end of their use. On Loch Arkaig the iron screw steamer Rifle seen in the card ran a mail and supply service from1861 to 1939. She also performed timber towing duties for the owners, Lochiel Estates.
Rifle carried guests of Cameron of Lochiel on shooting trips including Queen Victoria1873 and Duke of York circa1930
She sank at this pier in the late 1930s and her remains were raised by Spean Bridge Garage recovery vehicle and taken to the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine.
I snapped the extras showing her in the museum in 2012.
She is a good example of an early prefabricated screw steamer. Sadly commandos blew off her bow when training at Achnacarry Castle and only the stern remains and  in a very fragile state
