VISITOR TO CAMP WALDO

Recently, I visited my cousin at his residence in the far north of Wisconsin, just the proverbial stone's throw from Lake Superior...he calls it Camp Waldo. This Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) decided to join us. This is the female...notice the black moustache compared to the red in the male...and it's the largest of the woodpeckers in Wisconsin. If you've ever watched one pecking at a tree you'll be amazed at how much wood they can move. It's almost like sawdust off a large saw.
