Native bracelet on rock

I am starting to realize how much technique is important in using a light tent. I expected that lighting an object would be an easier task, but I am still having difficulty getting an overall even exposure. Today I experimented with a native design bracelet and for contrast I balanced it on a rock. I tried moving my lights around, but I kept getting the two bright spots on the side of the bracelet with the dark area in the centre. I tried this with the front of the tent up and with it down. (I used photoshop to lighten it during post processing) I am beginning to think that maybe the lights are too strong and I need to move them farther away .... any ideas?
