Wimbie Creek

We can walk along our street to the beach, but we have the option of ducking round the back into a little bush reserve and taking the track beside Wimbie Creek. It is not a true creek, but is designated by the acronym-loving bureaucracy as one of a few small ICOLLs in the area - Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes and Lagoons.

It breaks through the sandy beach and into Batemans Bay only after sustained heavy rains, and even then is not flushed out properly until the occasional king tide floods it. The consequence is that, especially in hot weather, it can be quite on the nose as trapped seaweed and other vegetation decomposes.

But this never lasts long, and it is usually a pleasant, musical place, inhabited by brightly coloured parrots and other birdlife.
