Life in Canada

Moves Like Jagger

Beyond thrilled this morning to see not one but three of these little puffballs! The Piping Plover is a small shorebird that is one of North America's most endangered birds. Piping plovers are listed as federally and provincially endangered in Canada (and they are also a species at risk in the United States).
A nest was discovered on a small section of beach so immediately conversationalists were alerted and a special cage was put over the area to protect the nest from predators and humans.  The entire area is roped off to keep humans away now.  I waited patiently for them to come a little closer...just a little closer.  They blend in so well with the sand, so focusing on them from a distance was a challenge for my camera!

For perspective, a Killdeer (who was annoying the chicks), kindly flew to the log where one of the parents was watching over the little brood (extra). I managed to get two of the chicks in one shot when they had a little race.....

Oh the simple pleasures and great joy that nature gives us  :))
