J.L. Runeberg's Day

Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804 - 1877) is the national poet of Finland and today we have celebrated his birthday. On February 5th we eat Runeberg's torte. It's a Finnish pastry flavored with almonds and rum or arrack. There is usually raspberry jam in a sugar ring on the tart. According to legend, J.L. Runeberg loved this torte and enjoyed one with punsch for every breakfast. Our family has a tradition to have torte jury every Runeberg's Day and this time we rated three different ones. The winner was baked by bakery Tanniset (the one in the middle).
